HVWS vs. MVWS: Water Spray Fire Protection for Transformers and Turbines

Transformers, turbines and other high-hazard electrical or rotating equipment need fire protection that standard sprinklers or extinguishers aren't designed for. That's where water spray systems come in — and specifically, where the distinction between high-velocity (HVWS) and medium-velocity (MVWS) systems matters.

**What high-velocity water spray (HVWS) does**

HVWS systems deliver water through nozzles at high velocity, designed to rapidly cool and extinguish fires involving oil-filled electrical equipment — most commonly transformers. The high-velocity spray pattern is engineered to penetrate and cool the burning oil quickly, which is critical because a transformer fire involving its own insulating oil can escalate fast without rapid intervention.

**What medium-velocity water spray (MVWS) does**

MVWS systems use a broader, medium-velocity spray pattern, typically applied to protect a wider area rather than concentrating on a single piece of oil-filled equipment. You'll see MVWS used for turbine enclosures, cable galleries, and other zones where the goal is even coverage across a larger hazard area rather than the concentrated, rapid-cooling application HVWS is built for.

**How the system actually activates**

Both HVWS and MVWS systems typically follow the same basic sequence: a detection system (heat or flame detectors appropriate to the zone) triggers the deluge valve, which releases water through a fixed array of spray nozzles positioned around the protected equipment. It's a fixed, automatic system — not something that relies on someone reaching a hose in time, which is exactly the point for equipment where a fire can escalate in seconds.

**Where each one applies, in practice**

If you're protecting an oil-filled transformer specifically, HVWS is generally the appropriate choice. If you're protecting a turbine enclosure, generator housing, or a broader high-hazard area like a cable gallery, MVWS tends to be the better fit. Larger industrial sites — power generation facilities, major manufacturing plants, and process industries — often need both, protecting different equipment across the same site.

**Is this safe to use around electrical equipment?**

Water and electrical equipment sounds like a contradiction, but these systems are specifically engineered for this application — the water spray pattern, droplet size and delivery method are designed around the specific fire behavior of oil-filled and high-hazard electrical equipment.
